White rhinos set foot in Uganda

AFTER three years of fundraising, training and construction, the first white rhinos set foot on Ugandan soil on Tuesday.

They were transported to Zziwa Ranch in Nakitoma, Nakasongola district, on Wednesday. Rhino Fund Uganda spearheaded the efforts and lobbied different groups to support the campaign to reintroduce rhinos in the country.

The four rhinos were captured at Solio Ranch in Kenya in February.

For several weeks, the Southern White rhinos were kept in an enclosure at Solio Ranch to allow them relax.

Without proper boma training, the rhinos might stress and hurt themselves while in the crate during the long journey, said Moses Mapesa, the Uganda wildlife Authority executive director.

The rhinos were transported in separate trucks in a convoy led by Francis Gakuya of Kenya Wildlife Service, Yvonne Verkaik, the Rhino Fund executive director, said.
