Minister to solve rhino row

State minister for tourism Jovino Akaki has intervened in a dispute between two wildlife institutions over the proposed relocation of two white rhinos to Nakasongola sanctuary, reports Gerald Tenywa.

Speaking recently, Akaki said the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which is the lead wildlife agency, had approved that the rhinos be part of the breeding stock.

Sources at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre said they wanted to retain ownership of the rhinos. We would only surrender the rhinos as a loan, a source said, adding that negotiations had been initiated in a meeting presided over by the minister.

Sources said the fraternity in the centre have emotional attachment to the rhinos known as Sherino and Kabira.

Rhino Fund Uganda bought the rhinos at $100,000 each from Solio Ranch in Kenya three years ago.

Yvonne Verkaik, the head of the Rhino Fund Uganda, yesterday said Disney Foundation in the US had offered two white rhinos that would be imported in September.
